Get to Know Galena, Ohio
Nestled at the confluence of the Little and Big Walnut Creeks, where the headwaters of the Hoover Reservoir begin, the Village of Galena boasts a rich history dating back to its founding in 1809. The Post Office was established in 1826, known then as the Fever River Post Office.
Established initially as a milling center, Galena flourished throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, with its most notable industry being the Galena Shale Tile and Brick Company. Operating from the 1890s until 1983, the company played a significant role in shaping the local economy and development of the area.
Today, remnants of Galena’s industrious past can still be seen in its historic downtown district.
The heart of Galena retains its New England-style charm, with buildings dating back to the 1820s. Many of these original structures have been preserved and repurposed, creating a vibrant community hub filled with restaurants, pubs, and local businesses.
While the village began with older, traditional homes, the early 2000s brought a wave of new development, offering a mix of historic and modern living.
Despite its growth, Galena has maintained its small-town feel, with a population of just 687, according to the 2010 Census.
For those interested in learning more about Galena’s past, the Galena Historical Foundation, established in 2012, plays an active role in preserving and celebrating local history.
The Foundation hosts regular monthly meetings and invites history enthusiasts to join. Additionally, the Foundation organizes popular annual events such as the Galena Fall Gathering and the Christmas Tree Lighting Festivities, both of which draw residents and visitors alike.
The Foundation also operates a museum located in the lower level of the Village Hall. Open to the public on the first and third Saturdays of each month (excluding January and February), the museum showcases artifacts highlighting Galena’s industrial roots, cultural milestones, and community development.

Just a short quarter-mile detour from the trail leads trekkers to downtown Galena, where they can enjoy the village’s inviting public square, local restaurants, and shops.
In addition to the OTET, Galena features the paved Kane’s Crossing Trail, known for its picturesque views from the bridge over Big Walnut Creek. Gnomewood Skills Park: This is a bike trail, so if you have kids that are old enough and adventurous enough, go for it! We enjoyed walking through it. But please be respectful if there are bikers and give them the right of way.
Hoover Mudflats Boardwalk: Deemed unsafe in 2022 – The plans to repair and reopen in late 2025. The boardwalk is along the Hoover Reservoir and would be great for sightseeing and fishing. Other trails are available for better views. Great for birding
Ruffner Park: An old school playground with metal slides, teeter totters, and a legit merry-go-round! It also had a ball field. And our favorite, an area for creeking.
Miller Park: This park just received a fantastic playground in August 2024. There are two playsets for varying ages. The smaller set has a cute duck and turtle ride-on. The older set has climbing obstacles and a firetruck. There is also a basketball court and connected bike trails.
Part of the Preservation Parks of Delaware Co., Shale Hallow is also a haven for wildlife, where you might spot barred owls, pileated woodpeckers, and even migrating neo-tropical songbirds like the hooded warbler. Whitetail deer, raccoons, and coyotes are common, and amphibian enthusiasts can look out for the two-lined salamander. With opportunities for off-trail exploration and natural play, Shale Hollow Park is a perfect destination for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. The park’s building is also available for business meeting rentals, providing a scenic backdrop for any event.
Alum Creek State Park, to the west of Galena, offers boating, camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking, and even a dog park with a dog swimming area. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources runs this state park. Find out about all the state parks in our great state at their website.
Hoover Reservoir, on the east side of Galena, is a favorite of local anglers. The 10-horsepower motor limit keeps things lovely and serene for fishing. Several boardwalks in the surrounding area make Hoover Mudflats Boardwalk and Galena Boardwalk favorite birding spots.
Highbanks Metro Park is a part of the Central Ohio Park System. Highbanks is named for its massive 100-foot-high shale bluff towering over the Olentangy State Scenic River. Tributary streams cutting across the bluff have created several deep ravines in the eastern part of the 1,204-acre park. Ohio and Olentangy shales, often containing large concretions, are exposed on the bluff face and sides of the ravines. This park offers hiking, picnic areas, playgrounds, a nature center, and reservable group shelter houses.
