What are the scientific benefits of gratitude?

In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness.

Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, enjoy good experiences, improve their health, bounce back from adversity, and build strong relationships.

One thing we hear again and again when searching for relief from feelings of despair or depression is that an attitude of gratitude is often a source of relief.

Is there any scientific evidence that gratitude can help us navigate challenging times?

We see that gratitude opens us up to new relationships. When we show thankfulness to a new acquaintance that person is more often likely to seek an ongoing relationship with us.

We find that both physical and mental health is greatly improved by gratitude. Findings support that grateful people are healthier in both arenas.

Folks that make gratitude a priority are more empathic and far less aggressive. That just means a better future for everyone.

We see better sleep, improved self-esteem and increased mental strength in those that make gratitude important. We even see strength in overcoming extreme situations.

If you want to give your life a real, solid, proven boost, you could try an attitude of gratitude. Make it a priority all year long. Not just on Thanksgiving.
